Cospas-Sarsat is an international search and rescue program that was established in 1979. Its purpose is to provide satellite-based emergency distress notification and location data to rescue organizations around the world. The program is operated by a consortium of countries, including Canada, France, Russia, and the United States, and is supported by nearly 200 other countries. The Cospas-Sarsat system operates on two frequencies (121.5 MHz and 406 MHz) and allows rescue teams to quickly locate and rescue individuals in distress, particularly those lost at sea or in remote areas where traditional communications may not be available. Since its inception, Cospas-Sarsat has been credited with saving over 50,000 lives around the world.
